Jorns travel post

I have been travelling since I was young. It has been a constant in my life. Even as a young boy there were trips to Switzerland. It was part of the family business: my father, and his father before him, were both jewellers and sellers of watches, so travelling to Switzerland to examine the latest items was essential. And, of course, on some of those trips there would be skiing.

Morten and I later created Linde Werdelin and would come to pursue the sports of skiing and diving – and unless you live in a picturesque Alpine town or on an idyllic beach, skiing or diving in the best locations requires travelling. To travel, then, is essential for us.

A large portion of my time is still spent travelling, and I like to think I have honed my ability to pack only the essentials. I know what I need and I know what I cannot cope without – whether the travel is for business or for pleasure.

This is what will always be in my bag whenever I travel:

Oktopus BluMoon
I will often be seen wearing the Oktopus Moon Tattoo or SpidoLite Gold – my daily wearers, if you will – but recently I have taken to wearing the Oktopus BluMoon. It has a more summery vibe. It’s nice to change things up in the wrist wear department. And in that vein, I also carry a strap tool and different-coloured rubber strap for quick changes on the go.

Orlebar Brown swim shorts, Martin Margiela jacket, Louis Vuitton loafers
I like to pack light, and these items will almost always feature. For summer getaways, a pair of swim shorts and a linen shirt are almost all I need, with the loafers and jacket for evening dinner. Simple, casual and stylish. Even for ski trips, you never know where you might encounter a pool – in the hotel, or a Jacuzzi in the chalet – so swim shorts are always taken.

Deck of cards
Cards are great. They are small and easy to carry; they easily fit inside my jacket pocket. And they can provide great relief from the waiting and queuing that frequently occurs when travelling. They’re also a fun thing to do with family over a sun-drenched, long, lazy lunch at the beach or even on a mountainside.

With just 52 cards, there so many different games to play and always a new one to discover. When meeting new people on travels, learning new games – or local variations on a classic – turns out to be half the fun of playing.

“Garden of Eden” – Ernest Hemingway
I always carry a book with me. Reading is my escape from this world; a chance to dive into the rich worlds of my favourite authors. I’ll read in both English and Danish, and currently I am working my way through Hemingway’s “Garden of Eden”.

Cigars
I have become a bit of a cigar aficionado in recent years and it’s usually the case I will carry a few with me on my travels. For a recent birthday, Morten even created for me a special gift: a bespoke LW humidor to store my cigars. It’s a truly unique item.

The bespoke LW humidor. Not a travel item, but essential for storing those cigars.

Polaroid camera
The Polaroid camera is the one item on this list that isn’t taken every single time. It only makes some trips, but when it’s with me and I can take pictures with it, it’s special. The camera has been around for years – it used to come on family holidays and holds sentimental value. I don’t always take it anymore because of its relative size, and these days my iPhone takes sharper images, but that feeling of taking a picture and having it be instantly printed out is irreplaceable.

iPad Pro
In terms of productivity, the iPad Pro is a big step up from the regular iPad. It’s not quite a full computer, but it allows me to get things done on the move and does not add too much weight to my bag. The keyboard makes it much easier to reply to emails, while the improved and larger screen make it more comfortable. Perfect.

And soon I will be packing my bag for France. You can be certain I will have all these things with me.
